The International Maritime Organization established the Day of the Seafarer in 2010 during the Manila Diplomatic Conference, which adopted amendments to the international convention on seafarer training standards. It was first observed on June 25, 2011, marking the anniversary of that landmark agreement for maritime worker safety. Millions of seafarers worldwide crew the commercial ships that carry roughly 90 percent of international trade, from food and fuel to raw materials and consumer goods. Despite this essential role, many spend long months away from their families, often working in demanding and hazardous conditions. The day recognizes seafarers' sacrifices and their contribution to the global economy, calls for improving their working conditions and safety, and reminds the public that the everyday goods they use often reached them after a long voyage made possible by these workers.
