On 23 May 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution — sponsored by Germany and Rwanda — designating 11 July as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica, which claimed the lives of more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys at the hands of forces from Republika Srpska. Both the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia formally classified the massacre as an act of genocide. The day honors the memory of the victims, supports survivors and their families, and pushes back against any attempt to deny or distort the established historical facts of the massacre, while promoting education on the causes of genocide and how to prevent it. Schools, human rights institutions, and communities in Bosnia and around the world mark the occasion with memorial events, exhibitions, and educational lectures aimed at reinforcing tolerance, rejecting hate speech, and preventing such atrocities from recurring.
