In April 2017, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution designating June 27 as Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day, co-sponsored by more than fifty countries. It was first observed that same year in recognition of this sector's vital role in the global economy. Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises make up about 90 percent of businesses worldwide, generate 60 to 70 percent of global employment, and contribute roughly half of global GDP. These enterprises play a particularly important role in empowering women, young people, and local entrepreneurship, and in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals. The day aims to raise awareness of the importance of supporting entrepreneurs and small business owners by improving access to financing, training, and markets, recognizing this as a key pathway to creating new jobs and reducing poverty.
