In April 2021, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/75/273 on "Global Drowning Prevention," designating 25 July as World Drowning Prevention Day, first observed that same year. The resolution responded to WHO data showing drowning claims roughly 236,000 lives worldwide each year and ranks among the top ten causes of death for children and adolescents aged 5 to 14. The day raises awareness that most drownings are preventable through simple measures such as teaching basic swimming skills, installing barriers around bodies of water, ensuring constant supervision of children near water, and providing rescue equipment in public spaces. WHO, governments, and water-safety organizations worldwide mark the occasion with awareness campaigns and free swimming and first-aid training, particularly in coastal and riverside communities most vulnerable to drowning incidents.
