On December 20, 2018, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring June 7 as World Food Safety Day, a joint effort by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization. The first official observance took place in June 2019.
The day draws attention to the importance of preventing, detecting, and managing foodborne risks, which sicken millions of people worldwide each year, threatening public health and negatively affecting food security, the economy, trade, and tourism. It also emphasizes that food safety is a shared responsibility spanning from farm to production, processing, and transport, all the way to the table.
Health and agriculture organizations worldwide mark the occasion with awareness campaigns on safe food-handling practices, such as proper cooking, storage, and personal hygiene while preparing meals, alongside calls for governments and businesses to strengthen food control systems and improve safety standards across the supply chain.
