On 6 September 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 6 July as World Rural Development Day, recognizing the vital role rural communities play in agricultural production, food security, and natural resource stewardship. The day aims to remind governments and international organizations of their shared responsibility to support inclusive rural development in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, particularly poverty and hunger eradication and decent work for the large share of the world's population living in rural areas. Around the world, governments and organizations mark the day through seminars, awareness campaigns, and policy discussions that spotlight the challenges rural residents face — limited access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure — while proposing practical solutions to improve livelihoods. The day also highlights the essential contributions of rural women and youth to local development, and encourages investment in sustainable agriculture and modern technologies that boost rural productivity without harming the environment.
