The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) launched World Suicide Prevention Day in 2003, in partnership with the World Health Organization, observed every September 10 to raise awareness that suicide is preventable through early intervention and social and psychological support. More than 700,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year, making it a leading cause of death among young people. The day aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health, encourage people to seek help, and educate communities on warning signs and how to intervene. Communities worldwide mark the day with awareness events, seminars, and candlelight vigils, alongside social media campaigns encouraging open conversations about mental health and directing those experiencing suicidal thoughts toward helplines and professional support.
