The first pediatrician visit is usually scheduled three to five days after birth, followed by another at around two weeks. The main goal is tracking weight, checking for jaundice, and confirming everything is progressing normally.
What the Doctor Checks
The doctor measures weight, length, and head circumference, checks skin color, grip strength, and basic reflexes, listens to the heart and lungs, and confirms the umbilical area is healing well. They will also ask about feeding patterns and how many wet diapers your baby has daily.
How to Prepare
Write your questions down beforehand, no matter how small they seem — there is no silly question at this stage. Bring the vaccination record if you have one, and note feeds and diaper counts from the last two days so you can answer accurately.
- Dress your baby in something quick to remove for the exam and weighing.
- Don't hesitate to ask the doctor about anything worrying you, however minor it seems.
- Keep the clinic's number handy for small concerns between visits.
- Ask for the upcoming visit and vaccination schedule so you can plan ahead.
