Huda was hurrying on her way to her friend’s house when she saw their elderly neighbor Abu Salem walking very slowly, carrying a heavy shopping basket that tilted to one side with every step. Huda stopped for a moment, glanced at her watch, and thought, «If I stop, I’ll be late for my friend».
She kept walking a little further, but turned back to see him pause to rest, tired from the basket’s weight. Huda remembered her grandmother’s words: «An hour of your time given to someone who needs it is worth more than many appointments». She turned back, approached Abu Salem, and said with a smile, «Would you let me carry the basket with you, uncle?».
Abu Salem smiled gratefully and said, «Bless you, my girl, my arm was really starting to tire». Huda walked beside him all the way to his house, carrying the basket cheerfully, listening to his stories about the neighborhood in the old days. When they arrived, Abu Salem thanked her warmly and prayed good things for her.
Huda arrived at her friend’s a few minutes late, but happier than she had felt in a long while. She told her friend what had happened, and her friend said, «You were a little late, but you gained something lovelier than time». Huda smiled in agreement, understanding that helping someone in need isn’t measured by the minutes we lose, but by the joy we gain.
