Long ago, Juha was invited to a grand feast at the home of a wealthy man in his town. As always, he wore his old, simple clothes. But when he arrived, no one greeted him, and no place was made for him at the table — it was as if he wasn't there at all.
Juha felt a little sad, but he did not grow angry. Instead, he hurried home, put on his finest cloak, and returned to the feast. This time, the servants rushed to welcome him, seated him in the place of honor, and brought him the tastiest dishes first.
Then Juha did something strange. He began dipping his sleeve into the food, saying loudly, 'Eat, my cloak, eat!' The guests stared at him in surprise and asked, 'What are you doing, Juha?'
Juha smiled and explained, 'When I came in my old clothes, no one honored me. Now, wearing this cloak, everyone honors me and serves me the best food. So it seems the honor is for the cloak, not for me — it is only fair that it eats too!'
The host felt deeply ashamed, realizing he had judged Juha by his appearance instead of his character. He apologized, seated Juha beside him, and from that day on taught his household to welcome every guest warmly, no matter what they wore.
This story has been told to children across the Arab world ever since, reminding them that a person deserves respect for their good manners and kind heart, not for their clothes or possessions.
The Lesson: Never judge people by their appearance — true worth lies in a good heart and good character.
