The International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute, UNESCO's main partner organization for the performing arts, established International Dance Day in 1982, to be celebrated every April 29 — the birthday of French dancer and choreographer Jean-Georges Noverre, known as the "father of modern ballet." The day celebrates dance as a universal art form that transcends linguistic, cultural, and political barriers, reminding governments and institutions of the importance of recognizing and supporting dance, while encouraging participation in its many forms, from folk and traditional dances to classical ballet and contemporary dance. Each year, a prominent figure in the dance world delivers a global message, translated into numerous languages and read at events worldwide. Dance schools, theaters, and cultural centers mark the day with free performances and workshops open to the public, trial classes for beginners, and festivals bringing together troupes from different cultures.
