On June 28, 2012, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring March 20 the International Day of Happiness, on the initiative of the Kingdom of Bhutan, which has for decades championed "Gross National Happiness" as a measure of progress alongside GDP. The first official observance took place on March 20, 2013.
The day rests on the idea that happiness is a fundamental, universal human goal, and that economic development alone cannot ensure the wellbeing of individuals and societies — it must be paired with policies that address mental health, social justice, and quality of life. The occasion is also known for the annual "World Happiness Report," which ranks countries by wellbeing indicators. Schools, institutions, and NGOs worldwide mark the day with events promoting optimism and gratitude, mental health workshops, and campaigns encouraging people to share moments that bring them joy.
