On January 9, 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/78/259, designating September 16 as the International Day of Science, Technology and Innovation for the South. The designation followed the Summit on Science, Technology, and Innovation held in Havana on September 15-16, 2023, where leaders of the G77 and China agreed to establish the day. The day affirms that advancing science, technology, and innovation is essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and building a fairer, more participatory, and inclusive world, particularly given the persistent technology gap between industrialized and developing nations. It calls for strengthened international cooperation and fairer technology transfer to countries of the Global South, along with support for building local scientific and research capacity, enabling these nations to address their development challenges with innovative, sustainable solutions.
