On May 28, 2020, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 74/275, designating September 9 as the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, in response to rising assaults on schools, universities, students, and teachers in conflict zones worldwide.
Such attacks include the bombing of schools, their use for military purposes, and the abduction or targeting of students and teachers, depriving millions of children of their right to education and threatening the future of entire communities. The day affirms that education is a fundamental right that must be protected even during war and crisis.
The UN, UNICEF, and partner organizations mark the day through awareness campaigns and reports documenting violations, calling on governments and parties to conflicts to uphold international humanitarian law and ensure children in conflict and displacement settings can continue learning safely.
