On 18 December 2014, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution — proposed by Sri Lanka — designating 15 July as World Youth Skills Day. The resolution responded to rising youth unemployment worldwide and recognized the importance of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in bridging the gap between education outcomes and the ever-changing demands of the labor market. The day promotes dialogue among governments, employers, and educational institutions on equipping young people, particularly in developing countries, with the practical and technical skills needed to secure decent work or launch their own ventures. UNESCO, the ILO, and their partners mark the occasion with workshops, skills fairs, and awareness campaigns encouraging youth to view technical education as a valuable path alongside traditional academic routes, with particular emphasis on empowering girls and young women in fields where they remain underrepresented.
