In December 2002, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution designating June 23 as Public Service Day, underscoring the vital role of public employees and institutions in serving communities. The following year, in 2003, the UN Public Service Awards were launched to honor outstanding public service initiatives. Government institutions and public services play a central role in delivering essential services such as education, health care, and infrastructure, while upholding the rule of law and transparency in managing public resources. This role becomes even more critical during crises, when people depend on public institutions for support and rapid response. The day aims to elevate public service as a noble profession, encourage innovation in delivering government services, and inspire new generations to engage in public work in service of their communities.
