In December 2022, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring 2025 the "International Year of Glaciers' Preservation" and designating March 21 each year as World Day for Glaciers, on an initiative by Tajikistan in cooperation with UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization. The first official observance took place on March 21, 2025, coinciding with World Water Day the following day. The day draws attention to the fact that glaciers supply more than two billion people worldwide with fresh water, and that they are melting at an accelerating rate due to global warming, threatening water, agricultural, and energy supplies across vast regions and contributing to rising sea levels. UNESCO and the WMO, working with the World Glacier Monitoring Service, organize scientific and awareness events including international conferences, media campaigns, and research initiatives to track glacier retreat and document its impact on the communities that depend on them.
