In December 2011, the UN General Assembly proclaimed March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day, with formal observance beginning in 2012. The date carries symbolic meaning: 21/3 references the triplication of the 21st chromosome, the genetic basis of Down syndrome. The day raises awareness of Down syndrome as a natural genetic condition rather than an illness, and pushes back against the stereotypes and stigma people with Down syndrome face in education, employment, and social life. It affirms their right to dignity, independence, and full inclusion in society on equal terms with everyone else. UN bodies and Down syndrome associations worldwide organize awareness events under a different theme each year, including the "Lots of Socks" campaign, encouraging people to wear mismatched, colorful socks as a symbol of accepting difference, alongside conferences at UN headquarters bringing together families, advocates, and policymakers.
