The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, together with the World Health Organization, launched this day in 2006 at UN headquarters, before the UN General Assembly formally recognized it in resolution 66/127 in 2011, to be observed annually on June 15. The day supports the International Plan of Action on Ageing, which acknowledges the importance of addressing elder abuse as both a public health and human rights issue.
Elder abuse takes many forms, from physical and psychological neglect to financial exploitation and denial of basic care, often occurring within families or care institutions without being reported due to fear or the social isolation many older people experience. The day highlights the need to raise awareness of older people's rights and provide support and reporting mechanisms to protect them from exploitation and neglect.
Civil society organizations and health authorities worldwide mark the occasion with awareness campaigns targeting families and caregivers, training workshops to recognize the signs of abuse, and calls to strengthen policies and laws that protect older people and ensure their dignity and well-being.
