The World Obesity Federation first launched World Obesity Day in 2015. It was originally observed on October 11 before moving permanently to March 4 starting in 2020. The day comes amid rising obesity rates globally, now recognized as one of the major health challenges of the 21st century, linked by research to heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.
The day works to correct the common misconception that obesity is simply a matter of individual willpower, highlighting instead that it is a complex health condition shaped by biological, social, economic, and environmental factors. Health ministries, medical associations, and NGOs mark the occasion with campaigns on healthy nutrition and physical activity, calls for public health policies that curb the spread of obesity, and support for people affected by it, free from the social stigma often attached to the condition.
