Most doctors recommend weaning off the pacifier between one and two years old, before continued use starts affecting tooth alignment or the development of certain speech sounds.

When to Start

Pick a relatively calm stretch in your toddler's life, away from other big changes like starting daycare or a new sibling arriving. Gradual weaning is usually easier emotionally than an abrupt stop for a toddler past age one.

Gentle Weaning Methods

Gradually cut down usage times (limit it to sleep only, for example, then remove it later), or tie giving it up to a positive event like «giving it to a younger baby» or a «pacifier fairy». Praise your toddler generously at every step of progress, with no punishment for a setback.

  • Don't wean suddenly during illness or another stressful time — pick a stable period.
  • Replace the pacifier with another soothing item, like a favorite stuffed toy or soft cloth.
  • Expect some crying and fussing in the first days — it's normal and usually passes within a week or less.
  • Don't go back to the pacifier once removed except for a truly difficult exception — reversing makes the next attempt harder.
