Robert Boyle was born in 1627 at Lismore Castle, Ireland, into a wealthy noble family, and received an elite private education that included scientific travels across Europe. He later settled in Oxford, where he was a founding member of the «Royal Society» in London in 1660, one of the world's oldest and most influential scientific societies.

Boyle, with his assistant Robert Hooke, conducted precise experiments using an air pump they developed to study the properties of air and gases in a vacuum. In 1662 he formulated «Boyle's law», stating that the pressure of a fixed amount of gas is inversely proportional to its volume at constant temperature, one of the earliest precise quantitative physical laws in the history of science.

Scientific Legacy

Boyle published his seminal 1661 book «The Sceptical Chymist», in which he critiqued traditional alchemical theories based on the four classical elements, and called for a rigorous experimental method grounded in observation and repeatable experiments, earning him recognition as one of the founders of modern chemistry. He also contributed to defining the modern concept of a «chemical element» in something close to its present form. He died in 1691.
