On November 17, 2015, UNESCO proclaimed September 28 as the International Day for Universal Access to Information, and the UN General Assembly officially adopted it as a UN Day on September 28, 2019, affirming the importance of this right at the global level.
Access to information is a fundamental human right closely tied to freedom of expression and the press, forming a cornerstone of transparency, anti-corruption efforts, and government accountability, as well as a prerequisite for meaningful citizen participation in public life and decision-making.
UNESCO and media and human rights organizations mark the day with seminars and conferences discussing freedom of information laws worldwide, encouraging governments to enact legislation guaranteeing public access to government information, and supporting independent journalism and a free press.
