The date marks the anniversary of the Assembly's 1990 adoption of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. The day highlights the substantial economic, social, and cultural contributions migrants make to both their host countries and countries of origin, while also drawing attention to the challenges and risks they face, including exploitation, discrimination, and the dangers of irregular migration journeys. International migrants number more than 280 million people worldwide. Awareness events on migrants' rights, campaigns against hate speech and discrimination targeting migrants, and initiatives celebrating migrant success stories are held around the world, alongside discussions on policies for safe, orderly, and regular migration.
