On April 12, 2018, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution declaring June 3 as World Bicycle Day, an initiative championed by Polish-American sociologist Leszek Sibilski with support from Turkmenistan. The resolution recognized the bicycle's uniqueness and its more than two-century legacy as a simple, reliable, and accessible means of transport. The day highlights the bicycle as a clean, environmentally friendly mode of transport that helps cut carbon emissions and ease urban traffic congestion, alongside its significant health benefits in boosting fitness and preventing chronic disease. The bicycle also carries economic and social value, offering an affordable means of mobility to millions and supporting sustainable development in both urban and rural areas. Cities and organizations worldwide mark the day with group rides, bicycle maintenance workshops, and campaigns to expand cycling infrastructure, all aimed at encouraging more people to adopt cycling as part of their daily routine.
