UNESCO's General Conference proclaimed November 3 the International Day for Biosphere Reserves at its 41st session in 2021, recognizing these sites' role in demonstrating sustainable coexistence between people and nature. Biosphere reserves are areas designated under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme, launched in 1971, combining biodiversity conservation, scientific research, and sustainable development. The day highlights successful practices across more than 700 biosphere reserves in over 130 countries, presenting them as living laboratories for solutions that protect ecosystems while supporting local livelihoods. Member states and local communities mark the day with on-site events at reserves, scientific workshops, and awareness campaigns showcasing success stories in sustainable agriculture, ecotourism, and natural resource management.
