In December 2017, as part of its annual resolution on sustainable fisheries, the UN General Assembly proclaimed June 5 as the International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing. The date marks the entry into force of the Port State Measures Agreement, the first internationally binding treaty specifically dedicated to combating this type of fishing. Illegal and unregulated fishing poses a serious threat to food security and marine biodiversity, depleting fish stocks and undermining sustainable fisheries management, while also causing significant economic harm to law-abiding fishers and coastal communities that depend on fisheries as a primary source of income and food. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) leads the day's activities in cooperation with governments and ocean-focused organizations, running awareness campaigns on the importance of strengthening vessel monitoring and seafood traceability, and encouraging countries to join international agreements that combat these harmful practices.
