World Vegan Day was launched in 1994 by Louise Wallis, then chair of The Vegan Society in the United Kingdom, to mark the 50th anniversary of the society's founding and of the coining of the words "vegan" and "veganism" in 1944. November 1st was chosen partly because it aligns with traditional harvest and renewal celebrations in several cultures.
The day promotes veganism as a lifestyle that avoids all animal products in food, clothing, and cosmetics, driven by concerns for animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and personal health. Since its founding it has grown into an international observance marked in dozens of countries.
Activities on the day include plant-based food markets, cooking workshops, social media awareness campaigns, and environmental initiatives such as tree planting, all highlighting the connection between diet choices and sustainability.
